New Student Registration

Beginning classes are divided by age groups. Cost is just $105 for the 6-week term if attending once per week or $160 for twice per week. There are no additional fees to participate in classes - no membership fees, no equipment rental fees, nothing extra. You only pay the class fee. Equipment is provided; participants simply need to wear long, comfortable pants, a t-shirt, and clean, dry athletic shoes.

Our most popular class for new students is Beginning Foil. Beginning Epee and Beginning Saber are offered for ages 13 and up only. (If your child is interested in epee or saber, it is possible to arrange individual lessons in those weapons.) Preregister by emailing us at or calling 319-338-7171. Payment may be made at the first class.

Foil is fun and exciting. Fencers give both their mind and their body a workout as they outwit their opponents with a variety of techniques. The lightest of the three fencing weapons, the target for foil is the torso only, and touches must be scored with the tip of the weapon. Foil fencers enjoy the give and take of the game as they attack and defend.

Beginning Epee

Ages 13 - Adult: Saturdays 4:00 - 4:55

Epee requires precision, timing, and patience. Fencers set up their moves to surprise their opponents in a flash of action. The heaviest of the weapons, epee is the closest to the old dueling sword. The target for epee is the entire body from the top of the mask to the bottom of the foot. There is no right-of-way rule to protect epee fencers; they must constantly be on their guard.

Beginning Saber

Ages 13 - Adult: Wednesdays 6:00 - 6:55

Saber is aggressive, fast, and requires instant decisions. Saber is the only weapon that can score with the side of the blade. The target includes the body from the hips up, the arms, and the head. Saber bouts are the quickest of the three weapons and fencers use explosive speed with decisive actions.
